Vegan Mexico City

Mexico City’s vegan scene is absolutely unmatched in Latin America — and one of the most exciting on the planet. The Roma Norte neighbourhood alone has enough plant-based restaurants to fill an entire week, from the iconic vegan taquería that launched a movement to artisan sourdough bakeries, stunning Asian fusion cafés, and authentic Japanese ramen made by real ramen chefs. CDMX does it all, and it does it with flavour, creativity, and genuine soul.

Whether you’re a long-time vegan or just plant-curious, Mexico City has something special waiting for you. Here’s my guide to the best vegan and plant-based restaurants in the city, tried, tested, and loved.

Best Vegan Restaurants in Mexico City

1. Por Siempre Vegana Taquería — The OG Vegan Taquería That Started It All

Por Siempre Vegana on Calle Manzanillo is the restaurant that put Mexico City’s plant-based taco scene on the map — a legendary spot that has been serving flawlessly executed vegan tacos to devoted queues of locals since before it was fashionable. The tacos here are the real thing: hand-pressed blue and white corn tortillas filled with meticulously seasoned plant-based proteins — al pastor made from seitan with charred pineapple, cochinita pibil from jackfruit slow-cooked with achiote and citrus, and a mushroom tinga that is so deeply savoury and smoky it stops you mid-bite. Add your own salsas from the counter and eat standing up, the way it was meant to be done. Utterly essential.

2. La Pitahaya Vegana — Iconic Pink Tortilla Tacos & Vegan Mole

La Pitahaya Vegana on Calle Querétaro in Roma Norte is one of Mexico City’s most visually striking and genuinely delicious plant-based restaurants — instantly recognisable for its vibrant pink tortillas made with pitahaya (dragon fruit), which are as beautiful on the plate as they are on Instagram. But the food goes far beyond aesthetics: the mole negro is a deeply complex, slow-made sauce built from dozens of dried chillies, seeds, and dark chocolate that takes days to prepare and coats each dish with extraordinary depth and richness. The enchiladas and tostadas are equally memorable. La Pitahaya is a celebration of Mexican culinary tradition done entirely without animal products — magnificent from start to finish.

3. Gracias Madre Taquería Vegana — Jackfruit Carnitas & the Best Aguas Frescas in Roma

Gracias Madre Taquería Vegana on Tabasco is Roma Norte’s most festive and flavour-packed plant-based taquería — a colourful, lively spot where the jackfruit carnitas have developed a devoted following that crosses the city. The carnitas are slow-cooked, deeply seasoned, and shredded to perfection, arriving in warm tortillas with fresh salsa verde, pickled onions, and a wedge of lime — exactly as they should. The aguas frescas change daily and are made entirely from fresh fruit, making them an essential accompaniment to any order. The terrace is the ideal place to eat on a warm Mexico City evening, with a cold glass of hibiscus agua fresca in hand. Pure joy.

4. Miga Vegana — Artisan Plant-Based Sourdough Bakery

Miga Vegana on Chilpancingo in Roma Sur is the kind of bakery that makes you question everything you thought you knew about what vegan baking could be. This small, beautifully run artisan bakery produces sourdough loaves, laminated pastries, and baked goods of remarkable quality — all entirely plant-based, all made with extraordinary care and skill. The croissants are flaky and deeply flavoured, the sourdough has a proper open crumb and a crust that shatters satisfyingly, and the pastries change seasonally to reflect what’s best and most interesting from local producers. The space is small and the bakes sell out fast — go early, buy a bag of everything, and find a bench in the Parque México to enjoy them properly.

5. Plantasia Café — Plant-Based Asian Fusion in a Tropical Oasis

Plantasia Café on Puebla in Roma Norte is one of the most beautiful and transporting dining experiences in Mexico City — a lush, plant-filled space that feels like stepping into a tropical garden, where the entirely plant-based menu draws on Asian flavours and techniques to produce food that is as gorgeous to look at as it is to eat. The matcha lattes are perfectly made with ceremonial-grade matcha; the rice bowls are layered with beautifully marinated tofu, house-made pickles, and vibrant sauces; and the desserts — particularly anything involving black sesame or mango — are outstanding. It’s a place that rewards lingering: order slowly, look around at the extraordinary interior, and let the afternoon disappear.

6. Café Vegetal — Two Locations, Unreal Desserts

Café Vegetal is one of Mexico City’s most versatile and consistently excellent plant-based cafés, with two locations in the Narvarte neighbourhood and a reputation built on doing everything well — from breakfast and brunch through to afternoon coffee and truly spectacular desserts. The cakes are the headline act: towering layered creations with plant-based buttercream, seasonal fruit, and flavour combinations that are creative without being gimmicky. But don’t sleep on the savoury menu either — the avocado toasts are excellent, the grain bowls are hearty and well-constructed, and the coffee programme is taken seriously. A reliable, joyful spot that works equally well for a quick coffee or a long, leisurely brunch.

7. IQuit Bakery — The Best Cinnamon Rolls in Roma Norte

IQuit Bakery on Durango in Roma Norte is a cosy, 100% plant-based café and bakery that has quietly earned one of the most devoted followings in the neighbourhood — and the cinnamon rolls are the reason why. These are proper, generously sized cinnamon rolls: soft and pillowy with a perfect dough, deeply spiced and sticky with caramelised sugar, and finished with a vanilla cream cheese glaze that is entirely dairy-free and entirely magnificent. The rest of the baked goods menu is equally impressive, and the café itself is a lovely spot to sit with a good coffee and a laptop on a slow morning. One of those places that makes a neighbourhood feel genuinely special.

8. Veggino’s Pizza — Plant-Based Pizza That Rivals Any Pizzeria in the City

Veggino’s Pizza in San Miguel Chapultepec is Mexico City’s definitive 100% plant-based pizzeria — a serious, passion-driven operation that has set a new standard for what vegan pizza in the city can be. The bases are made with a proper long-fermented dough that develops real flavour and produces a crust that is simultaneously airy and chewy; the toppings are applied with restraint and good taste; and the house-made plant-based mozzarella melts and stretches in a way that will make any pizza lover very happy indeed. The margherita is the benchmark — simple, clean, and outstanding — but the seasonal specials always push the boundaries in interesting directions. A must for any pizza lover visiting the city.

9. V Ramen — Authentic Plant-Based Japanese Ramen by Real Ramen Chefs

V Ramen on Avenida Álvaro Obregón in Roma Norte is a genuinely extraordinary restaurant — an entirely plant-based Japanese ramen shop run by ramen chefs who have brought the same level of craft and obsession to their broths that you would find in the best ramen restaurants in Tokyo. The tonkotsu-style mushroom broth is the standout: cloudy, intensely rich, and built over many hours from dried shiitake, kombu, and a careful selection of aromatics, it coats every noodle with extraordinary depth of flavour. The toppings — marinated bamboo shoots, crispy tofu, soft corn, a perfectly adjusted egg alternative — are all made in-house. This is the real deal, and one of the most exciting restaurants in Mexico City for any ramen lover.

Tips for Vegan Travellers in Mexico City

Roma Norte is the undisputed heart of Mexico City’s plant-based scene — most of the restaurants on this list are within easy walking distance of each other, making it a perfect neighbourhood to base yourself in for a few days of incredible plant-based eating. The city’s metro system is cheap and efficient, and a great way to reach spots in other neighbourhoods like San Miguel Chapultepec and Narvarte. Lunch is the main meal of the day in Mexico City, so many restaurants offer a menú del día at lunchtime — usually the best value way to experience the kitchen at its best. Mexico City is a late city, with dinner rarely starting before 8pm, so plan accordingly. And don’t forget to try fresh aguas frescas wherever you go — they are one of the great pleasures of eating in CDMX.
