Vegan Frankfurt

Frankfurt’s most talked-about vegan dinner happens in the city’s narrowest building, a seven-storey sliver on the Main river where Seven Swans holds a Michelin star for a menu with no animal products at all. Down at street level, below the bank towers, the city eats a lot of hummus, Vietnamese noodles and Korean rice cakes, all of it plant-based.

Four of the eight places below are vegan Israeli kitchens, which makes Frankfurt one of the easiest cities in Europe for falafel, shawarma and shakshuka. I would book Seven Swans or a Leuchtendroter dinner first, then fill the rest of the trip with walk-in lunches. For other cities, browse all the vegan travel destinations.

Best Vegan Restaurants in Frankfurt

1. Seven Swans: Michelin-Starred Tasting Menu by the River Vegan

Vegan food at Seven Swans in Frankfurt

Diners leave talking about vegetables they thought they already knew: a carrot with physalis, a single perfect radish, and a beurre blanc (a French butter sauce, made here entirely from plants) that people still mention months later. The surprise menu runs about five hours, everyone eats at the same pace, and the chefs carry out each course and explain where it grew.

Most of the produce comes from the restaurant’s own permaculture farm, so the menu follows whatever is ready to pick. The house-made non-alcoholic pairing gets as much love in reviews as the wine. The building is the narrowest in Frankfurt, seven storeys tall, with floor-to-ceiling windows over the Main. The menu is €249 per person, and it is a once-a-trip dinner.

💡 Tip: Seatings start at 6:30PM, Wednesday to Saturday. Reservations open in batches and go fast, so follow their Instagram for the release dates.

2. Kuli Alma: Oyster Mushroom Shawarma and Big Platters Vegan

Vegan food at Kuli Alma in Frankfurt

Order the Kuli Alma platter for two if you cannot choose, which is the usual problem here. Regulars rave about the oyster mushroom shawarma, the kebab and the aubergine lasagne, all made from plants and all generously seasoned. Portions are huge, the fresh juices are excellent, and some dishes carry real chilli heat, so ask your server which ones.

Kuli Alma is a lively Israeli restaurant with a terrace, a wine list and a bar that turns out mojitos, and it is one of the busiest vegan tables in the city on a Saturday night. Finish with the panna cotta, which shows up in photo after photo. Book through the website for weekend evenings and arrive properly hungry.

💡 Tip: Open daily from 12PM to 11PM, closing at 10PM on Sundays.

3. 269 TwoSixNine: Shakshuka, Schnitzel and Sunday Brunch Vegan

Vegan food at TwoSixNine in Frankfurt

People come back for the Tel Aviv plate, the shakshuka (a baked tomato and pepper stew), crisp falafel with good sauces, and a golden schnitzel. The plant-based tuna salad wins over sceptics, and the carbonara has a following of its own. Leave room for the cheesecake or the chocolate brownie, because both turn up in most photos from the restaurant.

The name comes from 269, the ear-tag number of a calf that became an animal rights symbol, and you may spot it tattooed on a server’s arm. The kitchen is kosher and fully plant-based, on a calm Westend street. Sunday brunch is a sharing spread for two or more, with hummus, labaneh (thick strained yoghurt, made from plants here), falafel and salads.

💡 Tip: Open 12PM to 11PM Monday to Saturday and 12PM to 10PM on Sundays. Sunday brunch runs 12PM to 3PM, and there is a weekday business lunch from 12PM to 3PM.

4. Dominion Food Revolution: Smash Burgers and Hummus Sabich Vegan

Vegan food at Dominion Food Revolution in Frankfurt

The smash burger on a soft brioche bun is the order people post about, followed by the hummus sabich (hummus piled with fried aubergine and pickles, after the Israeli street sandwich). Shawarma and the döner plate come up in review after review, and the loaded fries finish the job if you are sharing with someone who claims they are not that hungry.

Their own bio calls it Frankfurt’s healthiest junk food, and that is a fair description. It is a casual vegan and kosher restaurant with a terrace on Grüneburgweg, and fridges by the door hold takeaway meals and desserts for the train. The same team runs a food truck and catering, so keep an eye out for it at city events.

💡 Tip: Open daily from 11:30AM to 9:30PM, until 10PM on Fridays and Saturdays. It is a short walk from 269 through the Westend, so a two-stop hummus crawl is entirely possible.

5. Leuchtendroter: Breakfast Buffet by Day, Sharing Menu by Night Vegan

Vegan food at Leuchtend Roter in Frankfurt

Dinner is a nine-course sharing menu built around vegetables, and reviewers single out a pepper cream with Jerusalem artichoke and a celery and apple course. Diners say the cooking respects vegetables and never tries to imitate anything else, and that the sharing menu for two is more than enough food. Expect flavours from all over, served as small plates.

Mornings are a different scene, with a generous breakfast buffet of house sourdough, spreads, smoked beetroot and raw dishes that one regular calls the best vegan breakfast in town. The Instagram bio says “vegan opium for the people”, which sets the tone for this calm, design-led Ostend restaurant with relaxed music and friendly staff.

💡 Tip: Breakfast runs 7AM to 11AM on weekdays and 8AM to 1PM on weekends and holidays. Dinner is Tuesday to Saturday, 6:30PM to 10PM, and the menu is about €95 per person, so book ahead.

6. Ong Tao Vegan: Vietnamese Noodles and Mango Curry Vegan

Vegan food at Ongtao Kitchen in Frankfurt

Order the vegan duck with mango curry and rice, the dish people keep recommending, then a bún bò Huế (a spicy lemongrass noodle soup from central Vietnam). The bún bò Nam Bộ chay, a rice noodle salad with lemongrass “beef”, is the lighter choice. Add summer rolls and a lychee and calamansi soda, which reviewers order on repeat.

This is the all-vegan branch of the Ong Tao Vietnamese restaurants, hung with lanterns and full of warm wood, facing the green belt of parks that rings the old town. The menu runs from phở to vegan sushi boxes and bánh bao (fluffy steamed buns), and the staff stay friendly and quick even at the dinner peak.

💡 Tip: Open daily 11:30AM to 2PM and 5PM to 10PM, with the kitchen closed in between, so plan a late lunch elsewhere.

7. Sunbap: Truffle Japchae and Tteokbokki Vegan

Vegan food at Sunbap Frankfurt in Frankfurt

Get the truffle japchae (stir-fried sweet potato glass noodles) and the tteokbokki (chewy rice cakes in chilli sauce), which reviewers love for their sweetness and slow spicy finish. Bibimbap, kimchi pasta and dumplings round out the menu, and the black sesame latte tastes a little like tahini in a cup. Banana bread and matcha keep the café side busy.

Sunbap is a small, minimalist Korean café with two Frankfurt branches, one in Bockenheim near the old university campus and one on Friedberger Landstraße in Nordend. Prices are low, the playlist leans toward 2015 pop, and popular dishes can sell out late in the day, so come early for dinner if you have your heart set on something.

💡 Tip: Walk-ins only, and you can bring your own drinks. Bockenheim opens 10AM to 9:30PM Monday to Saturday and 10AM to 5PM on Sundays; Nordend opens 11AM to 8PM Monday to Saturday and 11AM to 6PM on Sundays.

8. Life Deli: Shakshuka at the Jewish Museum Vegan

Vegan food at Life Deli in Frankfurt

The shakshuka and the roast beef sandwich, both made from plants like everything else here, are the dishes people describe most. Hummus sabich and the Tel Aviv mix are the other favourites, and the cauliflower steak makes a lighter lunch. Non-vegans in reviews are often surprised by how much they enjoy the tofu and vegan egg dishes.

Life Deli sits inside the Jewish Museum near the river, and you do not need a museum ticket to eat there. It is an organic, kosher café and restaurant, bright and calm, with an English menu and friendly staff. Come for an oat milk latte and cheesecake before the museum, or a long lunch after a walk along the Main.

💡 Tip: Open 10AM to 5PM on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays, and 10AM to 10PM Thursday to Saturday. Closed Mondays.

Apple Wine and the Taverns of Sachsenhausen

Across the Eiserner Steg footbridge from Seven Swans, Alt-Sachsenhausen is Frankfurt’s apple wine quarter. Apfelwein, called Ebbelwoi in the local dialect, is a dry, sour cider poured from a Bembel (a grey stoneware jug painted with blue) into a Geripptes, a glass with a diamond pattern said to help greasy fingers keep their grip. If it tastes too sharp, order a Sauergespritzter, apple wine topped up with sparkling water.

The taverns are built around long shared tables, so expect to end up chatting with strangers. On weekends and holidays the Ebbelwei-Express, a painted vintage tram, loops through the city serving apple wine and pretzels on board. Tavern menus lean on cheese, eggs and pork, so drink in Sachsenhausen and eat at the places above.

Vegan Frankfurt: What to Know Before You Go

  • Frankfurt’s two tavern classics are not vegan: Grüne Soße (a cold sauce of seven herbs) is made with sour cream or yoghurt and served with boiled eggs, and Handkäs mit Musik is a sour-milk cheese marinated with onions.
  • Book Seven Swans weeks ahead and a Leuchtendroter dinner a few days ahead. Kuli Alma fills up on weekend evenings, and Sunbap takes walk-ins only.
  • Most supermarkets close on Sundays. Shops in the Hauptbahnhof (main station) and at the airport stay open, so stock up there.
  • The S-Bahn (suburban train) runs from the airport to the Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes. Within the city, a day ticket covers the U-Bahn (underground), S-Bahn, trams and buses.
  • Cards are widely accepted now, but smaller cafés and the apple wine taverns still like cash, so carry some euros.
  • Frankfurt is an easy stop on a longer German trip, with Vegan Berlin, vegan Munich and vegan Hamburg all written up.

When to Visit Frankfurt

Late spring to early autumn is apple wine garden season, when the Sachsenhausen taverns set tables outside and the riverbanks fill with picnics. The Museumsuferfest, a huge festival along the Museum Embankment on the last weekend of August, brings food stalls, music and fireworks to both sides of the Main.

From late November until just before Christmas, the Christmas market fills the Römerberg, the old town square, with mulled wine and lights. Avoid the big trade fair weeks if you can, especially the Book Fair in October, because hotel prices jump and the best tables go early.
