Vegan Halloween Candy USA

American Halloween is a pillowcase for a candy bag, the house on the corner that gives out full-size bars, and the big trade on the living room floor afterwards where everyone tries to offload their Tootsie Rolls. If you’re the one with the bowl this year, a lot of the candy in that trade is vegan, and some of it is the good stuff: Skittles, Sour Patch Kids, Swedish Fish, Airheads, Jolly Ranchers and even a Reese’s cup.

The tricky part is that the vegan candy and the gelatin candy are often made by the same company and sold in the same mix bag. Skittles are fine, but Starburst, which shares a bag with them in half the Halloween variety packs, still has gelatin in it. Here are nine you can buy in bulk for the door, a couple of treats to keep for yourself, and the lookalikes to leave on the shelf.

Vegan Halloween Candy at a Glance

The Best Vegan Halloween Candy in the US

1. Skittles: The Original Kind Only

Skittles Halloween fun size bag, an easy vegan Halloween candy for the bowl

Original Skittles are about the safest thing you can put in a bowl: chewy, fruity and so familiar that nobody looks twice at them. The US recipe dropped gelatin years ago, the shine comes from carnauba wax made from palm leaves, and Mars has taken out the titanium dioxide too. The fun-size Halloween bags are the least effort way to fill a bowl.

Skittles Gummies are a separate product made with gelatin, so check you’ve grabbed the right bag, and give the Skittles and Starburst mixes a miss even though they’re everywhere in October.

🛒 Target | 9.65oz fun size, $4.19

2. Sour Patch Kids and Swedish Fish: The Treat-Size Mix

Sour Patch Kids and Swedish Fish treat-size Halloween bag

Sour Patch Kids hit you with a coating of sour sugar first and then turn sweet, which is the whole fun of them, and Swedish Fish are soft, chewy and a flavour nobody can quite put a name to. The 80-count treat-size bag mixes Sour Patch Kids, the watermelon ones and mini Swedish Fish, and none of them has gelatin or beeswax. Swedish Fish get their shine from carnauba wax.

Most people who buy this pack love the sweet and sour mix. A few have grumbled that their bag was heavy on the Swedish Fish, which is not the worst problem to have.

🛒 Target | 80 treat-size bags, $10.29

3. Smarties: About 230 Rolls for $10

Smarties Halloween bag of candy rolls

American Smarties are the chalky, tangy little tablets in twisted cellophane, nothing like the chocolate Smarties in Canada and the UK. They’re made from dextrose, a sugar from corn, and the Smarties Candy Company says every one of its candies is vegan and made free of the top allergens and gluten.

The Halloween Trick or Sweet bag holds around 230 rolls for about $10, so you won’t run out before the last knock on the door. They don’t melt or go sticky in a warm pocket, which is why so many people buy them for classroom parties too.

🛒 Target | 64oz bag, $10.49

4. Airheads: The Mini Bars

Airheads mini bars Halloween bag

Airheads are soft, stretchy and very tangy, the kind of candy you pull apart slowly to make it last. The mini bars are sugar, corn syrup, starch, palm oil, flavours and colours, with nothing from an animal, and the Halloween bag has 76 of them in a mix of flavours.

Airheads Pops are the exception, because the company says they may contain dairy, so stick to the bars.

🛒 Target | 76 mini bars, $9.99

5. Dum Dums: A Lollipop for Every Door

Dum Dums Original Mix lollipop bag

Dum Dums are the little lollipops from the bank teller’s jar and the doctor’s office, and nobody is ever sad to get one, least of all when it’s the Mystery Flavor. They’re sugar, corn syrup, acids, salt, flavour and colour, made on dedicated equipment and free of the major allergens.

The Mystery Flavor is whatever comes out of the machine while one flavour batch is changing over to the next, so every one is a little different. The 600-count box comes direct from Spangler, the family company that makes them in Ohio.

🛒 Spangler | 600 lollipops, $49.95

6. Jolly Rancher: The Hard Candy, Not the Gummies

Jolly Rancher hard candy Halloween bag

Original Jolly Ranchers are the glassy hard candies that last forever and glue your back teeth together if you try to bite one. Watermelon and blue raspberry are the flavours everyone digs out of the bag first. They’re corn syrup, sugar, malic acid, flavour, colour and soy lecithin, so they’re vegan.

The Jolly Rancher name also turns up on Gummies, Chews, Bites and Filled Pops, and all of those contain gelatin, so the classic hard candy bag is the one to get.

🛒 Target | 7oz bag, $3.69

7. Reese’s Plant Based: The Peanut Butter Cup

Reese's Plant Based peanut butter cups, a vegan Halloween candy with chocolate

Reese’s Plant Based cups keep the salty, crumbly peanut butter middle and swap the milk chocolate for an oat-based one, and they’re certified vegan. Vegans who grew up on the original say these are about as close as you’re going to get, and they’re still on the shelves in 2026.

The miniatures bag from the Hershey’s Store is the one for trick-or-treaters. They contain peanuts and soy, so they aren’t for kids with a peanut allergy. The Hershey’s Plant Based Almond & Sea Salt bar is certified vegan too, if you want one for yourself.

🛒 Target | Hershey’s Store | $2.99 a pack, $6.99 for miniatures

8. YumEarth Halloween Variety Box: The Allergy-Friendly One

YumEarth Halloween Variety Box of allergy-friendly vegan candy

YumEarth makes organic candy that’s vegan and free of the top nine allergens, coloured with fruit and vegetable juice and set with pectin instead of gelatin. The Halloween Variety Box has 50 individually wrapped treats: lollipops, gummy fruits and Giggles, their take on a chewy candy.

Parents love it because it’s the one box every kid on the street can eat, and the only real complaint is that it’s heavy on lollipops. Because it’s organic, it also rules out bone-char sugar.

🛒 YumEarth | Whole Foods | 50 treats, $29.99

9. UNREAL Halloween Boxes: For the Grown-Ups

UNREAL Halloween boxes of vegan chocolate

These are the ones to hide in the kitchen for when the doorbell finally stops. UNREAL has two Halloween boxes, both vegan and fair trade: the dark chocolate peanut butter cups, which are rich and a little bitter and come in boxes of 20, and the dark chocolate coconut bars, which are just organic coconut, cassava syrup and dark chocolate. Either one feels far too good to hand out to strangers.

Not everything UNREAL makes is vegan. The Halloween variety bag also has Caramel Peanut Nougat Bars, which are made with whey, and the milk chocolate gems and pretzels contain milk, so stay with the dark chocolate cups and coconut bars.

🛒 UNREAL Peanut Butter Cups | UNREAL Coconut Bars | 2 boxes $30.98, 3 boxes $43.22

Candy Corn, the Candy America Argues About

Candy corn has been splitting the country since it was invented in Philadelphia in the 1880s. Half of America thinks it tastes like sweet candle wax and the other half buys a bag the minute it hits the shelves. Brach’s makes most of what’s sold today, and it even has its own National Candy Corn Day on 30 October, the night before Halloween.

Whichever side you’re on, it isn’t vegan. Brach’s recipe has gelatin, honey and confectioner’s glaze, which is shellac from the lac insect, so this is one argument vegans get to sit out.

The Ones That Catch People Out

  • Candy corn (Brach’s): gelatin, honey and confectioner’s glaze.
  • Starburst: gelatin in the US version.
  • Skittles Gummies: gelatin, unlike original Skittles.
  • Mike and Ike, Hot Tamales and Lemonheads: confectioner’s glaze, which is shellac.
  • Nerds: the red and pink flavours contain carmine, a red dye made from insects. Nerds Gummy Clusters also contain gelatin.
  • Tootsie Rolls, Tootsie Pops and Tootsie Fruit Chews: milk and whey.
  • Jolly Rancher Gummies, Chews and Filled Pops: gelatin.
  • Peeps: pork gelatin.
  • Airheads Pops: may contain dairy.
  • Oreos: no milk in the recipe, but Mondelez says milk cross-contact makes them unsuitable for vegans.

Vegan Halloween Candy: What to Know Before You Buy

  • The words to look for: gelatin, confectioner’s glaze or shellac, carmine or cochineal, beeswax, milk, whey, egg whites and honey, all on the back of the bag.
  • Bone-char sugar: some US cane sugar is filtered through bone char, and the big candy companies do not say where theirs comes from. For the strictest bowl, stick to candy made from corn dextrose (Smarties, SweeTarts, Pixy Stix, Fun Dip) or organic and certified vegan picks like YumEarth, UNREAL and Reese’s Plant Based.
  • Mixed bags are where most people get caught out. One gelatin candy in the mix means the whole bag isn’t vegan, so single-candy bags are much easier, or you can check every name on the back.
  • Recipes change from year to year. Everything here was checked in late September 2026.
  • Prices are Target’s in late September 2026, unless another shop is named.
  • Shopping in Canada? A few of these recipes are different there, so I’ve put together a separate guide to vegan Halloween candy in Canada.
